The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) is dedicated to improving the security of states and their people within a framework of democratic governance, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. DCAF contributes to making peace and development more sustainable by assisting partner states and international actors supporting these states, to improve the governance of their security sector through inclusive and participatory reforms. It creates innovative knowledge products, promotes norms and good practices, provides legal and policy advice and supports capacity‐building of both state and non‐state security sector stakeholders.

DCAF’s engagement in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) strives to strengthen citizen security and contribute to a democratic, just and violence free society by addressing security sector governance issues in the region in cooperation with governments, parliaments, security sector providers, intergovernmental and civil society organisations. DCAF promotes the application of good governance principles to help reduce institutional weakness and develop effective, efficient and transparent security and justice providers that are properly managed and overseen by the executive and legislative authorities in the region while being fully accountable to their societies.
For our Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Division, we are looking for a motivated individual to be our next:
Intern – Latin America and the Caribbean Unit (100%)
Location: Geneva
Starting date: 10 September 2018
Duration: 3 month with a chance of extension.
The role
Key areas of operation:
Provide project management support by contributing to the drafting of reports, concept notes and other project material.
Conduct background research on SSG/R issues in LAC.
Assist the Unit in communication matters and the organisation of events.
Proofreading and translation work.
Support in administrative and financial matters.
YOUR EXPERIENCE
Advanced university degree or currently enrolled in university studies in International Relations, Conflict Resolution, Law, Development, Security, Peace Studies, Political Science, or related fields.
Knowledge of and/or experience in gender and security projects is an asset.
Excellent command of written and spoken Spanish and English, demonstrated ability to draft and edit texts in both languages**; knowledge of French is considered an asset.**
Attention to detail, good organisational skills and ability to deliver on time.
Ability to work independently, to be proactive and solution-oriented.
Flexibility and willingness to carry out administrative tasks as required.
Good intercultural communication skills.
Necessary requirement: EU or Swiss citizen or holder of a valid work permit
