PROJECT ASSISTANT – PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS DIVISION – 50%

The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) is dedicated to improving the security of states and their people within a framework of democratic governance, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. DCAF contributes to making peace and development more sustainable by assisting partner states and international actors supporting these states, to improve the governance of their security sector through inclusive and participatory reforms. It creates innovative knowledge products, promotes norms and good practices, provides legal and policy advice and supports capacity‐building of both state and non‐state security sector stakeholders.

As part of the organisation’s mandate to promote democratic security sector governance, DCAF’s Public Private Partnerships (PPP) Division supports the international community in the development and implementation of norms and good practices in the field of business and security. For more information on the work of the PPP Division, please see: www.ppps.dcaf.ch. We are seeking a dynamic, organised and creative individual to be our next:

Project Assistant– Business and SSR (50 %)

Location: Geneva

Starting date: 15 November 2018 or mutually agreed date

Duration: Until 30 June 2020, depending on project funding availability

The role

The successful applicant will support DCAF’s business and security programme and play an active role in the planning and implementation of policy research and operational programmes that address security and human rights challenges in complex environments. Responsibilities

Key areas of operation:

  • Conduct applied policy research on security and human rights;

  • Support the development of practical knowledge products (such as handbooks, toolkits, and training modules);

  • Actively contribute to the planning, implementation and management of assigned projects to support the implementation of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. This notably includes developing project proposals and budgets, monitoring and implementation of projects, liaising with project partners, and preparing operational and financial reports;

  • Support the implementation of the programme’s communication and outreach activities.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of international human rights frameworks, such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights;

  • Prior research experience and demonstrated ability to draft, review and edit texts;

  • Prior experience assisting in the management of projects as well as in the organisation of conferences, workshops and training activities;

  • Fluency in English and Spanish. French highly desirable;

  • Swiss or EU citizenship or a valid work permit for Switzerland at the time of application is a pre-requisite.

    Favourable additional skills or experience:

  • Prior experience working on project communication and outreach;

  • Prior experience working on Results Based Management.
